Argentina vs Egypt highlights. How Messi and Co. Survived Egypt's.

Some football matches are decided in ninety minutes. This one felt like it lasted a lifetime. Argentina's 3-2 Round of 16 win over Egypt at Atlanta Stadium on July 7 will be remembered as one of the defining twists of the 2026 World Cup... not for dominance, but for survival.

For long stretches, this looked like the upset of the tournament. Yasser Ibrahim's early header gave Hossam Hassan's disciplined Pharaohs the lead, and goalkeeper Mostafa Shoubir turned into an immovable wall. He denied Lionel Messi from the penalty spot, then somehow kept out Alexis Mac Allister and Julian Alvarez in quick succession. When Mostafa Zico appeared to double Egypt's advantage midway through the second half,  before VAR chalked it off, belief was building that Africa's underdogs might actually pull this off.

Then Argentina remembered who they were....so interesting

With just over ten minutes left, Cristian Romero rose to head home a Messi cross, igniting the comeback. Four minutes later, Messi himself struck first-time, silencing Atlanta Stadium's Egyptian pockets and reminding the world why he remains the tournament's top scorer. The knockout blow arrived deep into stoppage time, Enzo Fernandez slotting home the winner to complete a stunning three-goal turnaround in the final quarter-hour.

What made this match compelling wasn't just the scoreline... it was the story arc. Egypt didn't sit back; they attacked with purpose, exploited space on the counter, and made Argentina's back line uncomfortable all afternoon. It's the kind of performance that should elevate expectations for Egyptian football well beyond this tournament, even in defeat.

For Argentina, though, the pattern is becoming unmistakable. This is now the second straight knockout match where the defending champions have needed late heroics to survive, first against Cabo Verde, now against Egypt. Champions find ways to win, and Messi's side keeps proving that maxim true, even when the script seems to be writing itself against them.

Argentina now turns to the quarterfinals, where Switzerland awaits after their penalty-shootout win over Colombia. If this Round of 16 clash proved anything, it's that no lead is safe against this Argentina squad ... and no opponent, however limited on paper, should be underestimated at a World Cup.
